Food parcels/Red Cross

East Staffordshire Council, working with the British Red Cross, is coordinating the collection and delivery of emergency food parcels to vulnerable people in the region.

If you have a car and some time to help, there’s information on how to get involved as a Red Cross community reserve volunteer and register to help here.

If you’re someone who is hoping to get a parcel delivered but isn’t sure how to access the service, this page gives you more information. Be aware that even if you’ve had the letter from the government identifying you as one of the vulnerable people who needs to self-isolate for 12 weeks, you will still need to register here or call 0800 0288327 to get a food delivery or other help – it isn’t automatic.

Home care

Are you able to help provide care for an isolated vulnerable person in their home? Staffordshire Council has launched iCare to help support our over-stretched home care support and is looking for people to get involved. It’s paid work, with training and there’ll be a DBS check but you’ll be at the front line of helping some of the most vulnerable and isolated people in our community. There’s a registration form here, but do read the information on the link here first.

If you’re someone who currently has personal care at home, and pays for that yourself, this page has an advice on how to manage that during the Covid-19 crisis.

NHS Volunteer Responders

You’ll have seen the call for former NHS and care staff to return to help the service during the crisis, but the Responders service is for those who want to get involved in a more general way – taking people to and from hospital appointments, dropping off medicines or just calling to check on someone. The number of people already signed up means the service is currently paused while admin is put in place, this page has more information.

If you are someone who needs to contact the NHS helpline for help or support, and you received one of the letters from NHS saying you’d been identified as extremely vulnerable, call 0800 028 8327. If you didn’t receive that letter but are self-isolating and need help, Staffordshire Council operates an emergency helpline – Staffordshire Cares – on 0300 111 8050. There’s more on how to access these services here.

Careline Calling volunteer callers

Careline is registered charity offering free telephone befriending services to people in East Staffordshire and the Derbyshire Dales. They’re looking for more volunteers to phone and chat with their isolated members. If you could help, volunteering details are here.If you’d like to make use of the service, and become a member, there’s more information on this page.

Cinnamon Trust dog walkers

Could you help look after or walk a dog belonging to someone who is in hospital or unable to leave their home? The Cinnamon Trust is a nationwide charity providing immediate help for dog owners who are elderly or terminally ill and unable to look after their pet. Volunteers offer dog walking or short-term foster care and the charity has this page, updated weekly, listing its most urgent cases.

Mutual Aid groups

A number of local projects have already been set up through the Covid-19 Mutual Aid network to help coordinate local activities. Most operate through Facebook pages, including ones in Uttoxeter, Barton-under-Needwood, and Winshill, with coordinators who – like me and this website – try to provide a platform for volunteers and those needing help to find each other. The Facebook pages are a good source of information on what’s currently happening locally.
